Just a keyboard musical instrument or a bridge to that special place which transcends any other way of communication and is in return able to reach the deepest parts of humans’ hearts ?
Well, it all depends in whose hands.
It is all in subtlety, refinement, expression, and a well cultivated character of a pianist .......... qualities that are lost for many nowadays and thus they search for 'stronger' stimuli (difficult fast 'all technique' pieces, coming to the stage scarcely dressed, and other show-like exhibitions.)
It is also about finding our own 'freedom' at the piano, our unique relation to it, and who teaches and guides us, really.
Music text is only 1% of a pianist's interpretation. All the rest is up to her/his creativity, sensibility, mastery, expression, character, discipline, intelligence, hard work, talent ..... and of course our relation to piano and music.
Very few piano teachers tell us that, and very few allow us that 'freedom' at the piano, and encourage us to search for that place beyond that makes all the difference in the world of pianism and artistry. A place that differentiates art from entertainment !
It is when a piano becomes a tool that we can use to create a bridge to that special place which transcends our own world, a tool for expressing a very important part of us that cannot be expressed any other way, a tool that a pianist can use to send light to the darkest parts of listeners' hearts.
It all depends in whose hands, it is just a keyboard musical instrument, or a bridge to worlds beyond.
And in hands of Maria João Pires, the piano becomes that bridge. She 'showed' me the way to ‘discover’ piano as something much more than just a keyboard musical instrument, and a way to discover myself as a pianist.
I discover new worlds every day since. I can't wait to play, I can't wait to make new discoveries, I can't wait to connect ... thanks to the most profound pianist of our time - Maria João Pires.
