COLOURING IN is a simple activity that does not require any special ability. Although it involves colours and, consequently, their effect on the brain, mind, and emotions, it can help performing artists fully develop their potential and improve their performance.
Guided colouring activities can help develop and improve:
Attention to detail
Fine motor skills
Concentration
Reaction time
Self confidence
Creativity
Imagination
All of these, in turn, contribute to the overall progress, artistic development, and improvement of performing artists.
Through the grip required to hold colouring tools (such as coloured pencils, crayons, and markers) and the precision involved in colouring, this activity provides an excellent way to develop fine motor skills and hand strength. Unlike writing, colouring can easily be practised with both hands. Strengthening these muscles can improve hand endurance and dexterity, which is particularly beneficial for pianists.
Colouring in not only evokes emotions but also provides a direct link to the subconscious mind and deeper emotional experiences. This enables colourists to gain a better understanding of their emotions and themselves, empowering them to express themselves more confidently and authentically.
Colouring also has calming and soothing effects, helping to reduce stress levels. As a result, performing artists may be better equipped to cope with performance-related stress and anxiety, overcome stage fright, and approach public performances with greater confidence.
In addition, colouring is an enjoyable activity that allows creativity to flow naturally and effortlessly. Creativity is an essential part of learning, growth, and artistic development for every performer.
Finally, colouring in is an accessible activity that requires no expertise, special talent, expensive equipment, or complex setup. Yet it can be remarkably effective, relaxing, and empowering, helping colourists discover and develop hidden abilities and untapped potential.
As part of the Alternative Approach to Music workshops, participants engage in guided colouring activities alongside other creative exercises. We use colouring books that I have specifically designed for this purpose—as tools for healing, personal growth, empowerment, and artistic development, with the particular needs of performing artists in mind.
