Honouring Our Light: The Sacred Rule of Two

Updated: 7 days ago

"Never give your sacred belongings to anyone who does not know their value. Do not throw your pearls before those who cannot cherish them, or they will trample them underfoot and turn to tear you apart."

~ Xenia E. Zilli (a paraphrase of a famous biblical proverb)

The Law of the Closed Gate - Protecting Your Peace and Sacred Energy:

There is a beautiful, sacred spiritual law (and the law of the heart): the people we invite into our inner world must be able to recognize the value of what we offer, and they must have the capacity to receive it. True connection asks for more than passive acceptance. It flourishes through a shared willingness that quietly says: "I see this. I treasure this. I am grateful to meet you here."

Without that mutual recognition, even the most generous offering slowly becomes a burden to the one who keeps giving.

When that shared willingness is absent, every explanation becomes another handful of water poured into sand. We slowly exhaust ourselves trying to convince someone of the value of a gift they were never ready to receive. In doing so, we gradually dim the Light we were trying to share.

If we find ourselves having to express a need, share a boundary, or offer a piece of our knowledge or our heart to someone more than twice, the most profound act of self-love is to stop talking and start acting to protect our peace.

The Silent Toll of Over-Giving:

When we refuse to close our gate to those who don't appreciate our presence, or simply are not ready for us, we inadvertently trap ourselves in a painful imbalanced cycle. Pushing past that second attempt leaves us vulnerable in three heavy ways:

    • Over-Explaining: We burn our precious mental energy trying to build a bridge of understanding for someone who cannot, or will not, take a step toward us.

    • Over-Giving: We pour our time, energy, deepest passions, and hard-earned knowledge into someone who treats our generosity as an afterthought or a disposable convenience.

    • Accumulated Resentment: The quiet anxiety of one-sided communication builds up over time. Eventually, we find ourselves over-reacting in the present because we are carrying the heavy weight of being ignored in the past.

We see this imbalance clearly when others create an artificial sense of urgency. They might demand our time, our listening ear, or our unique gifts with intense immediacy. Yet, when we rearrange our lives to meet their request, they respond with days of silence, indifference, or a dry, delayed 'thank-you'. This isn't just a mismatch of schedules; it is a breach of mutual respect.

The Sacred Rule of Two:

To guard your emotional well-being, I suggest adopting a gentle but firm boundary: say it once, clarify it once, and then gracefully step back.

    • The First Gift: You express your thought, offer your kindness, knowledge or expertise (or set your boundary) with total clarity.

    • The Single Clarification: You clear up any genuine misunderstanding, ensuring you have given the other person a fair and honest chance to meet you halfway.

    • The Closed Gate: If their response remains careless, indifferent, or inconsistent, you stop trying. You don't need to argue, scold, or insist. You simply, quietly withdraw your energy.

Honouring Our Light:

When we share our deepest passions—our creative work, our wisdom, or our spiritual practices—we are not just handing over information. We are offering something that cannot be replaced: our time, attention, presence, and the years that shaped them. Allowing someone to repeatedly pull from our reservoir without matching our enthusiasm devalues our Light.

Perhaps the first person called to honour your Light is you. It is a sacred gift that deserves to be appreciated and handled with care. We cannot reasonably expect others to cherish what we ourselves repeatedly neglect. If our own hands are careless with our gift, why should anyone else's be different ? Honouring our Light begins by becoming its first faithful guardian.

Closing the gate of our generous sharing is never an act of punishment, pride, or anger. It is simply the quiet decision to stop offering what is no longer being received with care. It preserves our peace, protects our Light, and keeps our sacred energy reserved for those who are ready to meet us with the same sincerity, respect, and generosity we freely offer them.

Never forget: your sacred energy is a privilege, not a constantly open buffet !!!

When people repeatedly show you that they do not recognise its value, believe them ... and act accordingly.

Sometimes you do not need to end a connection; you simply need to close the gate to your generous sharing—to your essence, to what is sacred, and to what is most valuable within you.

Sometimes that simply means adjusting the level of access you give. But sometimes, unfortunately, closing the gate also means ending the connection itself—especially when that connection can only exist through your openness, trust, and wholehearted presence.

A Personal Note:

This is a principle I apply to every area of my life—from choosing my students, mentors, collaborators, friends, partners, holistic health practitioners ... in other words—to any connection that requires meaningful, mindful, growth-oriented interaction and asks for genuine openness.
